Junior team takes Bronze at Surrey Youth Games

By Lesley Ip (Junior Team Manager)
The junior team started the day with a mix of apprehension and excitement. Many of our players had never taken part in any tournaments before but they settled into there stride quickly. They knew they faced a challenge with one player down due to Caitlin Penn having broken her ankle two days before the games, which means we had to forfeit one game in every match.

The teams were divided into two groups, with Epsom & Ewell, Spelthorne and Guildford in our group. We were up against Epsom & Ewell first and our players won all their games to take 5-1 (we forfeited the girls singles); we then beat Guildford 4-2 but the eventual winner Spelthorne were just too strong and we lost 1-5. This meant we came 2nd in our group, just enough to qualify to the semi-finals.
We were then up against Mole Valley but had already heard the whisper around the hall that they were good. However without hesitation they gave it their all and went down fighting with some great action and determination. Unfortunately we lost 4-2.
The players them advanced to play the third/fourth place play off against Elmbridge. I was worried but really had no need as they took it all in there stride and went for every point, a lot of fantastic rallies by everyone involved and the boys doubles had some incredible diving actions. The players eventually beat Elmbridge 4-2 and took a well deserved team bronze. As there manager for the day I could not be more proud of the team and we all wish Caitlin a quick recovery and hopefully see you back on court very soon.
